Philly's Phunniest 2011 Semi Finals

The results are in from the first of two semi final rounds of Helium Comedy Club's Sixth Annual Philly's Phunniest Person Contest.

Moving on the the finals, which will be held this Wednesday at 8:00 PM are:

John McKeever, Pat House, Mike Rainey, Gordon Baker Bone and Gary Vider

The second semi final round will be held tomorrow night, where 15 more comics vie for the last five spots in the finals. You can get tickets for tomorrow's show, and Wednesday's finals online.


Philly Comedy Round-up, Vol. 19

Helium Comedy Club will crown their 2011 Philly's Phunniest Person this week. With semi-final rounds of their sixth annual contest being held tonight and tomorrow, and the finals being held on Wednesday. You can buy tickets for the shows online.

Tuesday night, Kung Fu Necktie will play host to Tuesday Night Live (Facebook Event) - a night of stand-up, sketch and improv hosted by Maureen Costello. The show will feature performances by Doogie Honer, power point expert Jon Goff, inspirational speaker Fastball Pitcher Bob Gutierrez, improvised telanovela Pasiones de Pasiones, the improv stylings of Iron Lung as well as musical guest Richie Rich and the Poor People.

This Wednesday, Sketch Playground will present it's first "showcase" at L'etage. Play Favorites (Facebook Event) will feature improv performances by Hate Speech Committee, Iron Lung and Get a Room. The show will also feature favorite sketches from Sketch Playground and will be hosted by Ian David Vaflor.

Last week the second episode of Down the Show premiered at Connie's Ric Rac - now it is online for your enjoyment. The episode features an opening performance by Sherman Hemsley, stand-up from Chip Chantry, John McKeever and Conrad Roth, sketches from the minds of Rob Baniewicz and Abigail Bruley which feature performances from Aaron Hertzog and Joe Dougherty and sketches from Secret Pants and Camp Woods.

Philly Comedy Round-up, Vol. 18

The final preliminary round of the 2011 Philly's Phunniest Person Contest was held last night at Helium Comedy Club. Steve Balbier, Munzy K, and Gary Vider advanced to the semi-finals, which will be held next Sunday, and Monday at the club. Tickets can be purchased ONLINE.

The Philly Fringe Festival is fast approaching. This year's Fringe Festival will feature various comedy shows including twenty-four, Friends of Alcatraz, Dark Comedy, Fresh Laughs, PHIT House Team Shows, The Groundswell Players Present The Speed of Surprise . PHIT has recently announced they will be bringing the famous Cambridge Footlights to perform at the Adrienne on Sunday, September 18th at 7:00pm. Tickets will go on sale soon.

Tomorrow night The Barbary will play host to another Comedy Dreamz show featuring sketch, stand-up, and short films. Doors open at 9 and the show starts at 10. (Facebook Event)

Center City Comedy has released a new sketch - Painballing With Rambo. The sketch features performances by James Hesky, Billy Bob Thompson, Mary Radzinski, and Andy Nolan as the titular character - as well as a slew of other Philly comics in supporting roles. Check it out right here!

Philly Comedy Round-up, Vol. 17

As we talked about all last week Philly Improv Theater debuted their new house teams on Friday night. Along with the debuts came the revelations of the teams' actual names. Brandybuck and Shadowfax will now and forever be known as Hey Rube and ZaoGao. The teams will perform together during the Philly Fringe Fest at Fresh Laughs.

Next Tuesday, August 16, Chip Chantry will be recording his first live comedy album (Facebook Event) at Helium Comedy Club.  Pat House and Amir Gollan will also be performing. Tickets for the event are $5 and can be purchased in advance online.

Last night at Helium, the first round of 2011's Philly's Phunniest Person Contest rolled right along with James Hesky, Chris Cotton and H. Foley advancing to the semi-finals, which are fast approaching.

The Grand Opera House in Wilmington Delaware is now accepting applications for their LOL @ The Grand contest. Ten comedians will be selected to compete and the winner will gain the chance to open for one of their upcoming mainstage comedians. Submissions can be found online and the deadline to apply is November 1.

Comedians for a Cause is organizing fund raising efforts for one of our own. Recently, Philly comedian Danny Ozark was attacked, beaten and robbed. Friend and fellow comedian Mike Rainey has organized efforts to accept donations for Danny through his PayPal account (send money to mrainey82@gmail.com on PayPal) as well as having a fundraiser show Saturday, August 13th at The Irish Pol (45 South 3rd St. Philadelphia).


Philly Comedy Round-up, Vol 16

In case you haven't heard it yet, Doogie Horner was a featured guest on the Used Wigs Radio podcast recently. Listen to hear him talk about America's Got Talent, Last Comic Standing, designing book covers, and other pop culture fun.

Comedians Derek Gaines, Chris Cotton and Monroe Martin have started their own podcast, CDM's Midday Talk. Their first episode features guest Conrad Roth as the four talk about the death of Amy Winehouse, Captain America, and racism.

Last night the first round of Philly's Phunniest Person Contest continued at Helium Comedy Club with Dave Terruso, Jim McGinty and Darnell Williams moving on the the semi-finals.

This Tuesday at Helium, the Bird Text Comedy Show will feature Steve Gerben, Paul Virzi, and the guys have teased the release of a sequel to their hit sketch The Real Househusbands of Philadelphia. You can see a promo for part two HERE.

There is a new casting call out for Down the Show. The Philly-themed sketch show is looking for two men and one woman who can play "older" as well as one younger man and one younger woman. Interested actors can contact Abigail Bruley.

This friday Philly Improv Theater will debut their two new house teams, currently codenamed Brandybuck and Shadowfax. The two teams will reveal their names and perform with Upright Citizen's Brigade Harold Team Grandma's Ashes at 8:30pm and 10:00pm Friday night. When the teams were first formed, we told you who made it - and all this week we will be featuring the new house team members in their own 10 Questions With...interviews.

 


Philly Comedy Round-Up, Vol. 15

Yet another round of Helium Comedy Club's Philly's Phunniest Competition was last night with Mary Radzinski, Steven Bryan and Gordon Baker-Bone moving on to the semi-final round. The first round continues next Sunday, July 31st and each Sunday after until August 21st. Get your tickets HERE

New York comedian Kurt Metzger recently released a new album through Comedy Central Records called Kurt Metzger Talks To Young People About Sex. He talks in THIS INTERVIEW about it, as well as getting his start as a comedian in Philly.

This Tuesday, Philly Improv Theater will host their new, monthly fundraiser show at the Shubin Theater. This month, PHIT will donate all proceeds from the show to the American Association of Zoo Keepers. You can find out all about the charity, and the show, on the Facebook Event Page.

Also at PHIT this week is the debut of new panel comedy show Reasonable Discourse With Jerks. Wednesday night, Jim Grammond takes the reigns from Luke Giordano (host of PHIT's previous panel show The Bully Pulpit) where he will be joined on stage by John Kensil, Mary Radzinski, Mike Rainey and Blake Wexler to talk about what's going on in the world, and why it's funny.

The Ministry of Secret Jokes has been doing a lot of work on it's Flickr account, uploading pictures from the past few years of shows. Check it out to see, as Doogie Horner put it "how terribly all the Philadelphia comics have aged."

Starting Monday, August 1st there will be a new Monday night open mic in Northern Liberties. Comedy at the Piazza will be hosted by Dan Vetrano and Chris McGrail, and will be a replacement for their now defunct Comedy X-Change. Show starts at 9:30 and is at King's Oak, 1001 North 2nd St.
