Philly Comedy Round-up, Vol. 82

Matt Nelson and Maggy Keegan have announced the launch of Figment Theater with the mission to “to cultivate and nurture quality improvisational theater with artists and audiences through shared experiences rooted in fearless performance and nimble innovation.” Upcoming projects from Figment include The Vagabond SessionsJohn Hughes High, Troika, The Summer Courtship Series, and Slasher.

Philly Improv Theater has announced the casts for three new house teams. One, directed by Ralph Andracchio will join the current list of PHIT’s Saturday house teams while the other two, directed by Alex Newman and Rob Gentile, will be PHIT’s first Harold Teams, set to perform on Tuesday nights at the theater.

Stand-up comedian Josh Wolf will be headlining at Helium Comedy Club this weekend, but first he will make a stop at The Free Library this Thursday to share a collection of essays about being a stand-up comic.

Tonight, Meathook Comedy Presents: 318 with headliner Dan St. Germain at Connie’s Ric Rac. The show will also feature performances by: Alex Pearlman, Alex Pezzotta, Ryan Shaner, and Boston’s Pat Barrett, Shawn Carter, and Gary Petersen and will be hosted by Steve Slaughter.

Comedy Dreamz returns to The Barbary this Tuesday with a show featuring Body Dreamz, Aaron Nevins, JP Boudwin, Phyllis Voren, Nick Lucas, Christian Alsis, High Dramma, Ken BDC Jones, T.J. Hurly and more! Videos by Jesse Miller and Juiceboxxx! With DJs Emilio Airhorn and Wolfcity. Doors open at 9:00, the show starts at 10:00 and, as always, will be followed by a dance party.

This Wednesday Demetri Martin brings his Point Your Face at This tour to Helium Comedy Club.

Also this Wednesday, you can catch one of Philadelphia’s finest storytelling showcases with Tell Me a Story at Shot Tower Coffee. This month, Ryan Carey, Jen Curcio, Jim Grammond, T.J. Hurley, Aaron Nevins, Eric Smith, Valerie Temple, R. Eric Thomas, and Alison Zeidman will tell stories around the theme of “Road Trip”.

Sketch group The Whitest Kids ‘U Know will perform at the Trocadero Theater this Thursday. The group, known for their web videos and sketch show on IFC will bring their unique brand of humor to Philadelphia on their 2013 tour.

Comedian Amy Schumer will perform at The Keswick Theater this Friday. Schumer is known for her many television appearances, her album Cutting, and her Comedy Central special Mostly Sex Stuff. Schumer is the creator, star, and writer for Inside Amy, her Comedy Central sketch show that will debut later this year.

Also this Friday, Gorged! at The Bean Cafe will feature “humorous people doing and saying things to entertain just about everybody. Performers include: Alex Grubard, Sidney Gantt, Marc Kaye, and Jaime Nadell.

All Bets are Off! a stand-up comedy show with performances from Doogie Horner, Aaron Hertzog, Alex Pearlman, Alex Grubard, Dan Scully, and Sidney Gantt is this Saturday at World Cafe Live.

Philly Comedy Round-up, Vol. 61

This Tuesday, Comedy Dreamz at The Barbary (951 Frankford Ave.) returns for a night of comedy featuring Body Dreamz, Chris Cotton, Malwina, ManiPedi, Sharkee Katz, Bradley Beck, Nercorsexual, Joe Bell and more. With videos from Joe Stakun, Jared Dyer, and Down the Show. Doors open at 9, show starts at 10.

Myq Kaplan returns to Philadelphia this Wednesday to headline one night at Helium Comedy Club. Kaplan has appeared on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien and has since gone on to appear on The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson and in his own half-hour Comedy Central Presents... Tickets can be purchased online.

Tickets are still available to see Jim Norton at Helium on Thursday and Sunday night. Friday and Saturday shows are sold out. The comedian is known as the “third mic” on The Opie and Anthony Show as well as from his own HBO specials One Night Stand, Monster Rain, Lucky Louie, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

ManiPedi is debuting a new show this week at Philly Improv Theater. The sketch group will perform on Thursday and Friday night at 8:30 at PHIT (407 Bainbridge Street), with American Breakfast joining them on the first night and Local Holiday Miracle on the second. Next week they’ll be at it again with a second show, No More Wire Wangers (a remix of old sketches in preparation for their submission to Spank’d at UCB) on Thursday (7:30) and Friday (8:30).  Tickets can be purchased online.

Philly Improv Theater will be holding open-call auditions in search of actors for their next Sketch Revue—written by PHIT Sketch Team Codename RZA—on Saturday, November 3rd, 2012 from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm. Sign-ups begin immediately. Wednesday, September 5th Corey Cohen Comedy Productions will host a stand-up show featuring Nick Turner (Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, King Temp) and Andy Hanes (Conan, Comedy Central) at The Urban Saloon (2120 Fairmount Ave. Philadelphia). More information can be found on facebook, and tickets for the event can be purchased online.

Mani Pedi will be hosting another ManiParty on Saturday, September 1 to help cover their travel costs to the upcoming Boston Comedy Arts Festival. Joining them on the show (at L’etage, 624 S. 6th St.) will be fellow BCAF performers Camp Woods and The Feeko Brothers.

Meg & Rob have announced a new show, dubbed “The Next Final Show” set for November 1, 2012. The first show from the duo since Meg Favreau moved to Los Angeles last year. Keep your eyes out for more details about this must see reunion show in the near future.

Philly Comedy Round-Up, Vol. 54

The first semi-final of Helium Comedy Club’s Philly’s Phunniest Person Contest was held on Sunday night with Darryl Charles, Pat House, Sean Jackson, Vince Patterson, and Tommy Highland moving on to Wednesday night’s finals. The second semi-final round will be tonight at 8pm at the club.

This Friday, The Sidshow will celebrate it’s one year anniversary with a show at The Arts Parlor (Broad and Federal St.) featuring Malone, Martha Cooney, Hate Speech Sub-Committee, Asteroid!, Mani Pedi, Iron Lung, and The Amie and Kristen Show. The show starts at 8:30 and will be followed by a party in the Arts Parlor space.

Philly Comedy Round-up, Vol. 49

Last night, the seventh annual Philly’s Phunniest Person Contest continued at Helium Comedy Club with Darryl Charles, Tom Cassidy, and Chris Smith moving on to the semi-finals. The competition continues next Sunday, June 24 and the opening round continues on Sunday and Monday nights until August 13 (full schedule here).

This Tuesday, Rose Luardo and Andrew Jeffrey Wright host another edition of Comedy Dreamz at The Barbary (951 Frankford Ave. Philadelphia.) This month’s show will feature performances by Body Dreamz, Malwina, Nick Lucas, A Chorus Of Flesh, Omar Scruggs, Doogie Horner, Potato, and JP Boudwin as well as videos from Jason Hsu and The New Dreamz. Doors open at 9PM and the show starts at 10 – with a dance party following the comedy.

Wednesday, The BIG Show will feature special guest Eli Braden, and his musical comedy. Corey Cohen Comedy Productions hosts The Big Show every Wednesday at Underground Arts (1200 Callowhill St. Philadelphia) and brings a variety of comedy performances to the stage. Tickets can be purchased online.

This Friday at Connie’s Ric Rac (1132 S. 9th St. Philadelphia) JP Boudwin hosts the Uh Oh! Party Show - a night that “has no focus other than having fun.” The show will feature performances by The Feeko Brothers, Charles Rosen, and Magic Missile as well as a contest where comedians will be put to the test as each will draw a challenge to base their set around. The contest will feature Aaron Hertzog, Brendan Kennedy, John Nunn, Tim Butterly and Jim Grammond doing their best with whatever challenge they draw, whether it be writing a song, talking about current events, using props, or something else “equally horrible”.

Also Friday, Alex Gross and Mike Hochman will host Mike and Alex Get You Drunk at The Arts Parlor (1170 S. Broad St. Philadelphia). The show will feature improv from Philly’s Rare Bird Show, Richmond’s Richmond Comedy Coalition, and New York’s The Imposters as well as music from comedy band Lightning Bolts of Pain.

Finally, the latest episode of Gettin’ Close with Mike Marbach is online – on the new and improved Mike Marbach dot com. This episode features BJ Ellis – with whom Mike discusses “life, the ever present shortform-longform talk, the N Crowd, his feelings about Philly improv and much more”.

Philly Comedy Round-up, Vol. 18

The final preliminary round of the 2011 Philly’s Phunniest Person Contest was held last night at Helium Comedy Club. Steve Balbier, Munzy K, and Gary Vider advanced to the semi-finals, which will be held next Sunday, and Monday at the club. Tickets can be purchased ONLINE.

Bye Bye Liver: The Philadelphia Drinking Play is searching for talented actors (men and women ages 21-40) with experience in improv, theatre and sketch comedy to join its ensemble. Also searching for an assistant director, pianists and guitarists, stage managers, and technical directors. The Philly Fringe Festival is fast approaching. This year’s Fringe Festival will feature various comedy shows including twenty-four, Friends of Alcatraz, Dark Comedy, Fresh Laughs, PHIT House Team Shows, The Groundswell Players Present The Speed of Surprise . PHIT has recently announced they will be bringing the famous Cambridge Footlights to perform at the Adrienne on Sunday, September 18th at 7:00pm. Tickets will go on sale soon.

Center City Comedy has released a new sketch – Painballing With Rambo. The sketch features performances by James Hesky, Billy Bob Thompson, Mary Radzinski, and Andy Nolan as the titular character – as well as a slew of other Philly comics in supporting roles. Check it out right here!
